Neckties Slim Down
Get ready… The skinny tie is coming back! Okay, all you Flock of Seagulls fans you can pull out your eighties ties and wear them with pride again. This return to the skinny tie is the biggest in almost 30 years!
Although skinny ties are making a come back some necktie makers aren’t jumping on the skinny tie bandwagon. Brioni and Brooks Brothers will continue to offer their high-end collection at 4 inches wide.
For those of you looking to sport one of these thin neckties you should keep in mind that your suits, sport coats and dress shirts will have to be updated as well so everything is kept in proportion.
One reason for the return of the thin necktie is due to the slimming down of mens’ suits. Apparently guys have become more comfortable showing off their bods. Another reason is an attempt to inject some freshness into the neckwear market.
One caveat for big guys is they may not be able to pull off wearing a thin necktie because wider guys need the width of a wide tie to balance their bodies. A good rule of thumb to follow is that the tie shouldn’t be more than a half-inch wider than the jacket’s lapel.
Thin neckties look best with narrow shirt collars or button-down shirts, and do not wear a thin tie with a broad collar shirt! Ever!
