Art is in the Tie of the Beholder

Ever stare at a bunch of neckties and think, “Hmm, those would be great to use for sculpting?” Well, artist Seema Nusrat did. Her decision to use ties as her medium came when visiting a lighthouse where she saw a bunch of ties being unloaded.

Seema started her sculptures by first sketching large charcoal or pencil outlines then would construct a metal skeletal structure to cover with neckties.

Necktie sculpture‘Yellow Mellow’ was a structure made with all kinds of yellow ties. Seema had marvelously created an irregular figure of a woman without any facial features. Initially the artist noticed human figures from where she began looking at drapes without figures and capturing what she observed.

Who would of thought that your necktie collection could possibly be a work of art hanging in your closet.

Necktie Stops Spread of Sickness

Did you know that neckties could make you sick? Well, it’s not the tie that is making you sick, but rather the bacteria on it.

A study conducted in 2004 by Dr. Steven Nurkin found that neckties worn by doctors were eight times more likely to carry and spread infectious bacteria than ties worn by hospital workers without patient contact. And according to hospitalinfection.org, infections contracted in hospitals are the 4th largest killer in the U.S.

Who would of thought that the simple necktie could harbor such deadly content? Fortunately, the company Safe Smart, Inc. developed SafetyTies.

SafetyTies neckties are 100% silk ties with a special nanotechnology coating on them that prevents bacteria from attaching to the tie. In addition, these ties are wrinkle-resistant, will repel liquids, and can be dry cleaned.

Check out some neckties from Safe Smart.

Japan Ditches Ties to Increase Green

Sick of wearing a tie to work? Well, move to Japan and you won’t have to… if you don’t mind getting hot.

The presidents of Japan’s three biggest banks announced that their 1,630 branches are abandoning formal attire, including neckties, so they can increase office temperatures to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The move is being made to conserve energy (and also money).

Everyone including Japan’s prime minister is taking off their ties. Last summer, Japanese department stores started selling shirts that supported the no-tie look.

Some Japanese men refuse to wear a suit without a tie and have decided to stick it out. One such man is Masaki Nishimura.

Masaki Nishimura, a consultant for a human-resources firm in Tokyo, says the offices he visits are often way too hot. But while clients invite him to remove his jacket, “I cannot take it off,” he says. “They are our customers.” He would rather bake in the name of good manners.

Another man, Takeo Nishioka, complained that

casual dress was an affront to the dignity of the chamber, and has stuck to a suit and tie in spite of the heat. “How can parliamentarians be all relaxed when visiting schoolchildren turn up in full uniform?” he said in a session Aug. 9. He suggested making neckties obligatory again, but so far hasn’t won any noticeable support.

If this story has you hot under the collar or you’d just like to learn more about Japan’s new anti tie wearing outlook you can find it here.
